How to setup a USB to Serial cable and find the COM port number

Question:

  • How do I install a USB to Serial cable?
  • How do I find what com port my USB to Serial cable is?
  • How do I setup a USB to Serial cable to configure my Parani Bluetooth adapter?

Environment:

  • Parani Bluetooth Adapter Configuration

Answer:

To configure the Parani Bluetooth Adapters you must have a serial connection. The Parani software will need to know what COM port to use to connect to the device that you want to configure. The easiest way to do this is to use a USB to Serial cable. These general steps below should work in many cases for most USB to Serial adapters. There may be cases when these steps do not work and you need to seek out further/additional instructions from the manufacture or your IT group.

Most USB to Serial adapters should automatically install their drivers when plugged into a Windows 10 computer. If it does not automatically install then you might need to follow the install instructions for your USB to Serial adapter, or visit the manufactures website for the drivers for your USB to Serial adapter model.
  1. First, plug your USB to Serial cable into a USB port on your Windows device. (NOTE* Do Not have the Parani plugged into the USB to Serial adapter. Windows should alert you that it sees the device and is installing drivers. Wait a few minutes to give Windows enough time to install the drivers.

  2. You can verify that Windows installed the drivers and recognizes the device as well as find what COM port it is assigned to in the Windows Device Manager. You can get to the Device Manger by searching Windows or by Right Clicking the Windows Start button > Device Manager.

  3. In the Device Manager you will need to expand Ports (COM & LPT) to look for your adapter. Some adapters may show up as USB to Serial. Others may show up as the model name like it does here. The COM port number will show up next to your device. In this example you can see it is assigned to COM4.

If you have any issues with installing the drivers or getting Windows to recognize your USB to Serial adapter then you might need to visit the manufactures website or reach out to your IT group for assistance.
